Veggies & Herbs

Throughout the spring and summer seasons, we carry an extremely wide selection of vegetables for the kitchen garden. We also carry over 100 varieties of organically-grown herbs to complement the kitchen garden, and continue to offer herbs throughout the year for windowsill gardens.

Cole Crops have arrived! (week of 3/16/10)

Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale and kohlrabi make up a group of cool season vegetables in the Brassicaceae family known as "cole crops". The word “cole” means stem and has nothing to do with the fact that these vegetables are tolerant to “cold", although they do prefer/require the cool season temperatures of spring and fall. And we've got them: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage (Savoy, Flat Dutch, Golden Acre, Red Acre), cauliflower, collards, kale, kohlrabi and Swiss chard.

We also have rhubarb, asparagus, horseradish, seed potatoes, onion sets, shallots and strawberries.

Next week expect 6 types of lettuce, peas, bok choy and sweet onion plants.

Let's get the garden started! Don't miss our free and informative seminars on veggie gardening all spring.

Have you visited our Herb Department?

Herbs delight the senses with their scent, flavor, texture and color. Having been used for thousands of years as medicines, dyes, decorations, symbols, food and flavoring, herbs have a fascinating history and possess a myriad of meanings. Simply put, herbs are some of the most useful plants in the garden and among the easiest to grow.

Vegetables at Valley View Farms

The Foard family have been vegetable farmers in Baltimore County for four generations. We were growers of fresh produce for use by Baltimore food stores for many years prior to opening our store in Cockeysville in 1962.

Bill Foard, owner and CEO of Valley View (with a B.S. in Agriculture from Cornell University), insists on growing the best vegetable plants possible to sell at our store. He starts by purchasing the best seed available to grow our transplants at our farm in Hydes, MD. He and our head grower select the best varieties to produce the strongest and most prolific plants.

Tomato

Tomatoes

Nothing says summertime like a hand-picked, juicy tomato right from the backyard garden or container. Our own farm greenhouses grow over 30 varieties of these fresh, ripe beauties, from the diminutive Sweet Million Tomato to The Guiness Book of World Record's biggest ever Delicious variety (7 lb 12 oz).

Heirloom varieties are extremely popular, and we carry five including the classic, Radiator Ray's Mortgage Lifter. Our healthy transplants are sold hardened off and ready for your garden.

Pepper

Peppers

We go a little crazy over peppers at Valley View. Would you believe we have bell peppers in yellow, orange, purple, red and green? Our Super Heavy Weight variety takes two hands to hold. Our peppers have an international flavor too, with names like Valencia, Cubanella, Hot Portugal, Thai Hot and our nine varieties of Trinidad peppers.

With 37 different peppers, there is definitely one sweet or hot enough for the most "seasoned" pepper connoisseur. But take caution-- our Scorpion peppers are the hottest in the world!
