FREQUENTLY
ASKEd QUESTIONS

Do you sell native Maryland plants?
We carry a very large selection of Maryland natives in our Perennial and Nursery departments. Our online Plant Finder will sort plants that are native to our region.
Does Valley View Farms recycle plastic pots and trays?
Yes, we do recycle the plastic flats that are plants are grown in. We grow many of our annuals, all our vegetable plants and many of our larger potted plants. The flats get sent back to our farm greenhouses. We save some pots for school groups but recycle most through the Baltimore County recycling center.
How do I keep the deer and other wildlife from feeding on my plants?
Stop in and pick up a handout on Deer Resistant plants. Our plants signs will also indicate which plants are deer resistant. Our Garden Shop carries an extensive array of deer and animal repellents including Messina’s Deer Stopper, Bobbex, and Bonide’s Repels All.
How often should I water my houseplants?
Most houseplants should be watered when the soil is dry to the touch. Place your finger knuckle-deep in the soil. If it’s dry, it probably needs water. Be careful that all your plant’s pots have drainage. Always use good potting soil. If there is a saucer under the pot, empty any standing water once the pot has drained after watering. Check with us or online for each plant’s specific needs; i.e. ferns will usually need more water than succulents. Our signs and our staff can be very helpful for your plants’ watering needs.
When should I reseed my lawn?
Fall is a great time to reseed the lawn. Soil temperatures stay warm into October for optimum seed germination. Spring is also a good time to reseed the lawn. Look on our events page for Spring and Fall Lawn Clinics to guide you through the process.
Do you sell anything online?
We do not. We take pride in the care we give plants and the information we can provide for their success in your homes and gardens. We grow many of our plants and work with many local growers to bring our customers the best plants possible.
Why isn’t my hydrangea blooming?
There could be several answers to that question. Some flowers bloom on old wood, others on new, so when you’re pruning could be the reason for no blooms. There have been times in late winter/early spring that buds set just as we get a late season freeze. Hydrangeas could also be suffering from a particularly dry season. They do like water, especially during periods of drought. Stop in and talk to one of our nursery specialists to solve this problem.
What is your return policy??
We guarantee that all our perennials, tropicals, annuals, houseplants, herbs and vegetable plants leave our store well cared for and healthy. We take pride in the growers we choose to do business with as well as our expertise in caring for plants once they arrive here. Normally, a plant will show signs of unhealthiness within the first week or so of leaving our store. If you notice any problems, we encourage you to call us, within the first two weeks, to discuss possible causes and solutions. If the plant is still in it's original container, please bring it in to have a diagnosis made. Read more
